Baby Naming Tips From our Editors

Naming your baby should be a fun experience, but it can get frustrating. Should you name your baby after a relative, a celebrity, a sports star? Our number one advice is to remember that your child will have to live with this name for the rest of their life. (unless of course, you mess up so bad, they decide to change their name!!!).
  • Funny Names – Names that kids can make fun of. Kids can be awful to other kids and if a kids name can rhyme with a bad word or meaning then your child’s trips on the school bus may become difficult.
    Example: Ellie – Smelly Ellie

  • Hard to spell names – How many times in a lifetime are you asked to spell your name. Imagine what it is like for a person with an uncommon name to have to spell their name over and over again throughout life.

  • Bad Celebrity Names – If you name your child after a celebrity, make sure you believe in your heart that that celebrity will not do something to embarrass the name. In Germany, many people are still named Adolf which was a popular name in the 1930’s. However, as you can imagine, it has to be a tough name to grow up with now.

  • Watch out for Initials – 3 or 4 letter initials can spell some very bad words. Here are the most popular mistakes. (PIG, RIP, FAT, ASS)

  • Avoid Childish Names – A cute baby name may work well for your newborn but remember, your child will grow up one day.
